Steve's Home Poker Blog > Low stakes affecting gameplay?
As mentioned in my profile, I always try to play the same solid game no matter what the stakes are.
Something I find really annoying is that some of the players in my home game make bad plays when the stakes are low, and they end up getting lucky and sucking out.
For example, after we finished one of our League Tournaments, we decided to play a cash game.
-No Limit Hold'em
-$10 buy in
A couple of my friends were playing like fish...
NL Hand #1:
-Villian (short stack) and I limp.
-I hit 2nd pair on the flop of 3 clubs with straight potential and bet 1/2 the pot.
-Villian re-raises my 1/2 pot bet all in for an additional $.25 for me to call.
-Villian shows 2 overcards, no straight draw, and no flush draw
-Villian rivers sucks out the river with a higher pair.
NL Hand #2:
-Villian (short stack) limps UTG
-I raise 4x the BB in late position with 77 ($1.50 in the pot)
-Button and blinds fold.
-Vilian re-raises all in for about another $1.50.
-I call because I have a read that the villian has a medicore hand and I'm getting 2:1.
-Villian shows A8 off suit.
-Villian sucks out.
NL Hand #1 & #2 Analysis:
In both of these hands, do the players think they're in a tournament and have to push and get lucky because they're on the short stack??? We're playing a cash game here and there's no reason to gamble with mediocre hands when you can reload!
Here's a hand from a limit game we played...
.50/1.00 Limit Hand #1:
-Villian in the SB raises to 1.00.
-Steve in the BB with Q6 calls .
-Flop: J62 rainbow.
-Villian checks, I raise, Villian re-raises, I read that he has crap and call.
-Turn: X (low card, no flush draw).
-Villian bets, I call.
-Villian bets, I call, Villian says: "you got it" and shows Ace 10 off suit for a pair of 10's.
- Steve shows Q4 off suit and says "I thought I had a pair of 6's."
- Erik takes down a $6.50 pot.
.50/1.00 Limit Hand #1 Analysis
OK I know I messed up big here because I mis-read my hand. But who's the bigger donkey? Me because I'm blind, or my buddy because of failed bluffs on the flop, turn, and river??? Q6 is pretty weak...was it a questionable call on my part? I don't think so as I'm getting over 3:1 on my money.
Now I know I shouldn't get pissed off about this (these are the type of fish you want to play against to make money), but..
-I always tell my friends that the object of my home game is to help you improve your game, and money should not matter.
-They play for higher stakes online. If they can't play disciplined poker, should they even be playing online???
-I'm not here to take my friends money...I just want the best player to win.
Why can't they play the same solid game no matter what the stakes are?
